McCall

It was about three hundred years ago, Downs Woods and the adjacent McCall vineyards were the cultural center of an Algonquin Indian tribe. Known as Fort Corchaug (now Cutchogue), the natives selected this unique maritime property along the estuary as their home.

In 1902, Russell Simeon Walker, president of the Dime Savings Bank in Brooklyn (and originally an immigrant from England!), rode his horse and buggy out to the North Fork to find a summer home, and started a trend that continues to this day.  From the Walkers to the Munkenbecks down to the McCalls, the property remained in the family.

In 1996 Russell McCall joined forces with the Peconic Land Trust to save Down's Woods, Fort Corchaug, and the adjacent farmland from the threat of development.   Russ replanted the corn and potato fields with twenty one acres of vineyards.  A few years later Russ McCall purchased and gifted the North Fork Stewardship Center to the Peconic Land Trust to save the land and support their common purpose.  Finally in 2007, the first vintage was made at McCall Wines, his dedication to the land finally coming to fruition.

McCall Wines are committed to producing the best wine they can from their land, they focus on less is more, by producing only Russ McCall’s favourite varieties of Merlot and his beloved Pinot Noir from many trips to Burgundy when he ran a successful wine importers in Atlanta, Georgia.  Hopefully, one day we will be able to persuade him to release some of his Pinot Noir onto UK shores.  Then we can taste more of McCall’s wines (Pinot Noir, Rosé and Ben’s Blend - tribute to McCall’s Vineyard Manager, Ben Sisson) that were awarded high marks by The New York Times, and that was only his first vintage!

ï»¿“We see ourselves as stewards of this special place, and we are proud of our wine, an example of what this land can yield when treated with respect and care”

 - Russ McCall, McCall Wines

“they have a varietal purity …the pinot noir tastes like pinot noir, and not like oak, and the same with particularly the merlot, expressive of their locality, honest and unmanipulated”

 - Juliette Pope, Wine Director, Manhattan’s Gramercy Tavern
